My Life Before Islam
Mahdi (formerly known as Matthieu) grew up in Belgium. He was raised in a Christian environment and attended religious classes as a child. However, he struggled with concepts like the Trinity and the idea of God having a son, which never sat right with him or made sense in his heart. Even before embracing Islam, Mahdi was known for his kind and helpful nature; he frequently volunteered at centers for asylum seekers, helping families fleeing war and difficult situations. He believes this desire to do good helped keep his heart open to guidance.
The Moment of Guidance
His journey toward Islam took a significant turn during a humanitarian trip to Burkina Faso. It was there that he first heard the Adhan (call to prayer) and felt a deep emotional connection to it. He visited a mosque for the first time and was profoundly moved by the spiritual atmosphere. Upon returning to Belgium, he received a translation of the Quran from a friend's brother—a moment he remembers as being filled with immense honor and respect. When he opened the Quran to Surah Ibrahim, the verse "A Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light" (14:1) resonated with him deeply. After discussing Islamic scientific miracles with some Muslim brothers, he realized that Islam was the truth and formally took his Shahada.
Reflections
Mahdi is now a dedicated student of the Quran and the Arabic language, studying under Sheikh Mahmoud—who coincidentally is also from Burkina Faso. He is highly active in his local mosque, Abu Bakr, and even performs the Adhan when the regular Muezzin is absent. His relationship with his parents remains respectful; while they do not share his faith, they were not hostile to his conversion. Mahdi's dream is to build an Islamic library to provide resources for others to learn about Islam. He views Islam as a great responsibility and constantly asks himself: "What am I doing for Islam?"
