My Life Before Islam
Before embracing Islam, Marvin did not follow a specific religion, but he always held a firm belief in the existence of a Creator. He often used the analogy of a complex mobile phone—arguing that if something as simple as a phone requires a designer, then the human body, which is far more intricate, must certainly have one. His search for truth was also influenced by his interest in black history and the struggle for freedom, where he noticed that many influential figures he respected were Muslim.
The Moment of Guidance
His journey took a significant turn during the events of September 11th, when he happened to walk past a mosque offering information about Islam. He began reading the Quran, starting with Surah Al-Fatihah and Al-Baqarah. As an engineer, he appreciated the Quran's consistency, viewing it as the "final edition" of divine revelation. A pivotal moment occurred during a trip to Egypt; while praying in a mosque, he experienced an overwhelming emotional release during prostration (sujud), weeping as he felt a direct connection to God. Shortly after returning to Britain and with the encouragement of a close friend, he took his Shahada (testimony of faith).
Reflections
Marvin describes the moment he became Muslim as a feeling of immense lightness, as if he had shed the weight of his past sins and was born anew. He now carries a pocket-sized Quran everywhere, highlighting verses to better implement them in his daily life. He reflects on how Islam improved his character and his relationship with his family, who initially had misconceptions about the religion but eventually saw the positive change in him. He encourages others to read the Quran for knowledge and to see it as a "beacon of light" that provides comfort in both happy and difficult times.
