My Life Before Islam
Mark was born and raised in the city of Marcq-en-Barœul, near Lille, in northern France. Before Islam, he describes his life as living in "total darkness," wandering without a clear purpose or destination. While he was raised with some Christian traditions, such as attending church on Sundays, he felt a lack of spiritual fulfillment. A turning point in his life occurred at age 17 after a serious motorcycle accident. This near-death experience forced him to contemplate the meaning of life and sent him on a search for the truth.
The Moment of Guidance
His introduction to Islam happened in an unlikely place—a barbershop. While waiting for a friend, he overheard a conversation about the prophets Jesus (Isa) and Moses (Musa) from an Islamic perspective. Being naturally curious and a "hungry seeker of truth," Mark began asking deep questions. His search led him to a mosque where he happened to attend a lecture on Surah Al-Layl. There, he met a French convert named Mehdi, which shattered his misconception that Islam was only for Arabs. Shortly after, he embraced Islam, taking the name Abdul Aziz. He describes the moment of taking his Shahada as if a blind person had suddenly regained their sight, moving from a "blackened heart" to one filled with light.
Reflections
Abdul Aziz is notable for his rapid mastery of the Arabic language; he learned the alphabet in just four hours and was reading the Quran within a week of his conversion. Within five years, he became fluent enough to discuss complex theological concepts without a translator. He emphasizes that "the Quran is the language of the heart" and feels a deep sense of peace through Surah Al-Fatiha and the concept of "Tawhid" (Oneness of God). His current mission is to encourage other Muslims in France to learn Fusha (Modern Standard Arabic) and to maintain high moral character (Akhlaq) as a form of Dawah. His greatest hope is for his parents to find guidance so that they may be reunited in Paradise.
