My Life Before Islam
Dr. Bilal Philips was born in 1947 and raised in Canada as a traditional Christian youth in Toronto.
During university, he joined student movements seeking solutions to global injustice and wars, becoming influenced by communist ideology presented by mentors as the answer.
He describes himself as a "Christian in name only," lacking deep religious conviction at the time.
The Moment of Guidance
After a year and a half of communism, he noticed flaws in its ideas and real-world applications.
The turning point came when a party colleague converted to Islam and married a Muslim, telling him "Islam is different," sparking his curiosity to read about the faith.
He soon became convinced that Islam held all the virtues he sought elsewhere, especially impacted by the verse:
"Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light." (Al-Baqarah: 257).
Reflections
He later discovered his mother's respect for Islam (due to an Indonesian Muslim child they hosted) and his father's logical conclusion as a youth that Jesus (peace be upon him) could not be God.
He patiently invited his parents for 21 years until they both embraced Islam.
He traveled to Madinah to study Islam and Arabic from its source, despite discouragement that it wouldn't benefit his practical life.
