My Life Before Islam
Abdur-Raheem Green (formerly Anthony Green) was born in 1964 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to British parents. His father was agnostic and his mother was a devout Roman Catholic. Raised in the Roman Catholic faith, Abdur-Raheem began questioning his religion at the tender age of eight, struggling with concepts like the Trinity that didn't make logical sense to him.
He attended St Martin's Ampleforth, a renowned Roman Catholic boarding school in England, and later studied history at the University of London. However, he left his education unfinished due to growing disillusionment with what he perceived as the Eurocentric nature of the British educational system.
The Moment of Guidance
Abdur-Raheem's spiritual journey was marked by deep questioning and exploration. Dissatisfied with Christianity since childhood, he eventually left the religion. For nearly three years, he practiced Buddhism, drawn to its philosophy of inner peace and meditation. However, he never formally embraced Buddhism, feeling that something was still missing.
During his search, he also explored various other faiths and philosophies, seeking a direct relationship with God without intermediaries. The concept of Tawhid (absolute oneness of God) particularly appealed to him.
Reflections
The turning point came when Abdur-Raheem began reading the Quran. The clarity and logical nature of its message immediately attracted him. Unlike other religions he had explored, Islam provided straightforward answers to his questions about God, purpose, and life.
In 1988, Abdur-Raheem Green embraced Islam, dedicating his life to seeking and spreading knowledge. Today, he is a well-known Islamic preacher and chairman of iERA (Islamic Education and Research Academy), actively involved in Dawah work in both formal settings and informal contexts like Hyde Park's Speakers Corner.
