My Life Before Islam
Upbringing & Environment: César (41 years old) was born and raised in the "favelas" (slums) of São Paulo, Brazil. It was a harsh environment dominated by violence, gangs, and crime.
The Music World: He spent 30 years deeply involved in street culture and Hip-Hop music. He even founded a group called "Zuma Luma," though he didn't fully understand the spiritual weight of the name at the time.
Personal Struggles: Before his conversion, he struggled with addiction to alcohol and drugs. He described himself as an impatient person whose life was filled with complications and a sense of internal darkness.
The Moment of Guidance
The Turning Point: His journey began when he read the autobiography of Malcolm X during a very difficult and questioning period in his life.
The Power of the Adhan: While searching for musical instruments and sounds for his tracks, he happened to hear the Adhan (the call to prayer). Despite not understanding the Arabic words, it touched his soul deeply and acted as the first spark of change.
Impact of the Quran: He was profoundly moved by Surah Al-A'la. The verses emphasizing that the Hereafter is better and more lasting provided him with the spiritual strength to overcome his personal crises.
The Journey to Faith: His conversion wasn't just an overnight emotional event; it was a gradual process of learning that took years before he began practicing the pillars of Islam correctly in the mosque.
Reflections
Total Transformation: César believes that Islam is a complete way of life that changes a person entirely. For him, it meant replacing addiction with peace and chaos with stability.
Community Service: He converted a part of his modest home into a Musalla (prayer space) to serve the Muslims in his neighborhood, as the nearest mosque was hours away. It has now become a hub for dawah and community support.
Family Legacy: He never forced his faith on his family. Instead, he led by example. His children embraced Islam after watching him pray and seeing the positive changes in his character.
A Lesson from Hajj: During his pilgrimage, he faced a difficult moment when some criticized him for the tattoos remaining from his past life. However, he found comfort in the scholarly advice that "Islam erases what came before it," allowing him to start a new, pure chapter.
