My Life Before Islam
Omar was a young British man from Birmingham who began questioning his religious beliefs at the age of 14. Raised in a Christian environment, he found inconsistencies in the Bible and struggled with the concept of the Trinity. Feeling that his previous lifestyle and religious framework lacked sincerity and logical consistency, he decided to leave Christianity. He spent about a year researching various religions and philosophies from across the world but initially avoided Islam due to negative media stereotypes and misconceptions linking the religion to violence.
The Moment of Guidance
His perspective changed when he started talking to Muslim friends and realized they held a deep respect for Jesus (peace be upon him) as a prophet. This prompted him to do his own research into Islamic history and theology. One day, while at a local market, he met a street dawah (preaching) volunteer. During their conversation, Omar admitted that Islam made more sense to him than any other faith. When the volunteer asked why he hadn't converted yet and reminded him of the fragility of life, Omar found that he physically could not say "no." He took his Shahada right there in the market, although he initially felt a bit confused until he began reading and connecting with the Quran.
Reflections
Omar describes the Quran as a powerful "language of divinity" that speaks directly to the human soul. He was particularly moved by Surah At-Takathur, which warns against being distracted by materialism and the pursuit of wealth—a message that resonated with his observations of modern society. Since his conversion, he has dedicated himself to learning Arabic and memorizing the Quran. His positive change in character even led his mother to embrace Islam. Omar now works to help other new Muslims on their journey and encourages people to look past media portrayals to find the true peace within the Quran.
