My Life Before Islam
Bilal (formerly Gregory) grew up in Belgium as a committed Christian, adhering strictly to church teachings. He led a life centered around logic, research, and academic curiosity. At that time, Islam was not part of his daily life; his knowledge of the religion was limited to common stereotypes or superficial historical information. As someone who deeply valued rationality and sought truth through reading, he lived a conventional life until a specific moment challenged his entire worldview.
The Moment of Guidance
The turning point occurred during a high school history class when his teacher presented a verse from the Qur'an regarding warfare: "And kill them wherever you overtake them." While his classmates reacted with hostility toward Islam, this moment sparked a deep curiosity in Bilal. He embarked on a rigorous journey of research that lasted a year and a half, studying the Qur'an and its context without external bias. He discovered that the message of Islam was profoundly logical and consistent with the teachings of previous prophets. Convinced by the truth he found, he embraced Islam and took the name "Bilal," marking the start of his spiritual journey.
Reflections
After becoming Muslim, Bilal found a profound sense of purpose and inner peace. His faith was put to the ultimate test when he was diagnosed with cancer. Instead of despairing, he met the illness with remarkable tranquility, viewing the hardship as a sign of God's love and a means of spiritual purification. He often reflected on the verse, "Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity." Today, Bilal serves as the director of an Islamic school in Brussels, where he shares the light of his experience, proving that Islam provides the strength to transform personal trials into a path of gratitude and growth.
