My Life Before Islam
Adam was raised in a 100% British environment in Liverpool. His parents separated when he was an infant, and he grew up with his British mother and stepfather in a Christian household. He was entirely unaware of his father's identity or his Yemeni heritage until he was 16 years old. At that age, his mother introduced him to his biological father, who had been praying for years to be reunited with his son. This reunion was a life-changing event that marked the beginning of his exposure to Islam.
The Moment of Guidance
Adam's journey toward Islam began when his father gave him a translated copy of the Quran. He started reading Surah Yusuf and was immediately struck by the parallels between the Quranic story and what he had learned in church. Another powerful influence was hearing the word "Al-Haqq" (The Truth) repeated during Taraweeh prayers at a local mosque; although he didn't understand Arabic at the time, the weight of the word resonated deeply within him. After studying and visiting the mosque frequently, he chose to embrace Islam, taking his Shahada on his own birthday, which he describes as a spiritual rebirth.
Reflections
Following his conversion, Adam dedicated himself to inviting his family to Islam. He learned that demonstrating Islamic character (Akhlaq) and kindness, especially toward his mother, was more effective than constant verbal debate. His efforts bore fruit as his brother, his mother, and eventually his stepfather all embraced Islam. Today, Adam is active in "Embrace," an organization in the UK that supports new Muslims. He has also spent time in Yemen to learn Arabic and is currently memorizing the Quran, with his teacher hoping he will one day become an Imam to serve the British community.
